The bats of SE Asian forest interiors have been my favourites for decades and thus I have been using harp traps since the very beginning. However, carrying a harp trap to the spot is more often a problem than not. The countless designs I tried were either too heavy or inconveniently long to carry on international or domestic flights or to swerve around with in an impermeable jungle. Some harp traps were difficult to set up alone, to struggle with the twisting frame, fixing the legs in the streambed. The broken lines required painful replacement during the following day… And yes, I have to admit, sometimes it was hard to convince myself to drag along those huge pieces of metal for one more kilometre up a forest trail to find an even better spot.
But this is all over now. Based on our three-decade field practice, we instructed the development of the HUNBAT harp-trap – a revolutionary novel design, lightweight, durable and portable. After so many years of developing and testing, the new light-weight four-bank carbon harp-trap is the ultimate method to catch bats in dense forests or in front of bat roosts. I was lucky enough to take part in the process, hence I know that every part of it is perfectly designed to be able to use it in every condition. Carbon fiber is the best solution for a harp-trap for expeditions or even inland trappings. In case of air travel, every weight counts (it’s only 5 kgs!!!) and the half-version can be packed in a simple baggage.
